Biography

Due West Elementary School is one of the oldest schools in Cobb County. It began in 1841 as a combination church and school and was known as Gilgal. After the building was destroyed by the troops of General Sherman on June 17, 1864, a two story building was constructed in 1865 to house the school and renamed Due West School because it was located seven miles due west of Marietta. The school was closed in 1932 because of state consolidation guidelines. The school was reorganized in 1958 by the Cobb County Board of Education and the present facility was constructed.
Originally the school had 8 classrooms but additions in 1961, 1974, 1978 and 1988 enlarged the school to the size it is today. The school has had as many as 800 students. Due to recent construction of new elementary schools, our school has a population near 480 students today. Due West Elementary has also been ranked in the top 20 of elementary schools in the metro area and in the state of Georgia.
