Welcome_md_wht_2 Welcome to my classroom...........the best fifth grade at Due West!  We are going to have a wonderful school year of learning and I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you.   We'll have while we are learning and as education is a lifelong process, we'll all be learning.

UPdates worth a look!

We have been ever so busy at Davis Depot!  We are glad to put the writing assessment behind us and I was so proud of the effort I observed in the student's writing!  Way to go!

Ani-chr

Our electricity and magnetism unit is going nicely.  Again, partner-in-education, Cobb EMC provided the entire fifth grade with an activating lesson on electricity and tips on remaining safe when we're around electricity.  Ou class has been using the VanderGraff generator borrowed from Harrison High School to see how to make and observe static electricity.  You can see it was a real "hair-raising" experience.  Pictures coming soon.  My camera is charging right now so I can post them to the blog.

Book-talk-color  Cinema Cindy has been previewing our book fair for the students and we'll have the opportunity to "walk the red carpet" Tuesday evening.  Hope to see you there.  Information came home in today's Thursday folder.  Grant Mercer, has the most Accelerated points in the class and probably the entire school.   He has over 465 points!  Way to go Grant!

Big smile  Speaking of Grant Mercer, he was the District Science Fair winner.  He found out the boys' bathroom was cleaner than the girls' bathroom (according to the monitors, the boys didn't wash their hands so well so the sinks didn't show as many germs).  Congratulations, Grant!  You took our bacteria and micro-organism lessons to another level and we're very proud!

  • Remember to return any orders for student art work tomorrow.
  • Our field trip to Cato is Tuesday, March 17th.  We'll look at some constructive and destructive forces.
  • Rock Eagle is quickly coming at the end of the month.

Finally, I hope to see you at the Family Dance tomorrow night!  We'll see who can limbo!

Dear Parents,

Greetings from our classroom!  What a busy mode we are in, but what a great learning place to be.  Conference week is next week and I can’t wait to sit down with each of you as we discuss your child and the areas of growth  I’ve seen since the beginning of the school year and while we have areas where we may still need to improve, we have until the end of May to make it happen.

·        Congratulations to Emma Chorney, Jim Fadus, Garret Harris, Elise Hudson, Natalie Johnson, Grant Mercer, Diana Semegran, Caitlyn Shelton, Ryan Stevens, Patrick Stogner, and Kip Taylor for ending the period 10/13/08-12/19/08 with no tardies and no absences from school.  Way to go you guys!

·        In support of our Science curriculum, we recently enjoyed visits from our 4H representative as well as a visit from the

CATO

Environmental

Education

Center

.  They shared with our students more lessons on mold and micro-organisms and inherited traits.  Students learned a lot of their peers could do things like roll their tongues!

·        Grant Mercer’s mom came in this week and read some wonderful books to us which gave us an opportunity to have some good character discussions.

·        Congratulations to Isabel D’Arcy, first place winner and Emma Chorney, runner-up in the class Spelling bee.  It’s not easy to spell those words in front of everyone.

·        We’ll have 4H (Nutrition class) on February 2nd.

·        Early Release Day is February 4th.

·

Cobb

County

EMC Career Day is February 10th.   Our class will complete applications tomorrow.

·        Finally, welcome to Taylor Payne, a senior at

Harrison

and our new Rise student.

Taylor

is a former Due West Student and we’re glad to have her helping out in the classroom.

Finally, if you have any questions or comments, please email me at either of the email addresses above.  I am so appreciative of everything you do for our class and Due West.  We could not do it without you.

Together, we’re better!

Ani_superteacher_2   "Super Teacher" reminds you that we continue to celebrate Red Ribbon week at Due West Elementary.  The PTA has a special presentation for us tomorrow.  Today was mis-matched day and our class looked pretty funny.  Friday is Crazy Hair Day.  Who knew saying "no" to drugs could be so much fun!

Assignments:  Continue to work on review in Vocabulary.  It is due Friday.  Finish the Social Studies packet of Civil War battles, also due Friday.  Science:  Finish through page 55 in your workbook.  We'll have a test on Friday over matter.

Skate night is Thursday night at Sparkles.   Wear your Halloween costume and the fun will be from 5:30-8:30 pm.

Red Ribbon Week

Tomorrow begins Red Ribbon Week.   Be sure and wear red to school to show your stand against drugs.   The PTA has something exciting for us every day in recognition of Due West Students saying "NO" to drugs.

We will have an environmental program Friday, October 31st presented by our environmental partners at Cato Park.  They will be here to spend time with our fifth grade classes.  One hour will be spent outside with their staff so be sure and dress appropriately.

4H participation forms were sent home in last Thursday folders.  Be sure you sign and return the permission located on the reverse side of the letters sent from the Cobb County 4H program.

Book Buddy Visit

We had a great time with our book buddies last Friday.  We sorted shapes, explored patterns and colors, and got to know each other more.   We are really enjoying our kindergarten buddies and love having them stop in for a visit!  Share the fun we had through these photos.  Not all of them are on the blog, but I posted the ones I had.  I'll get the others on later.    http://s114.photobucket.com/albums/n245/judy1davis/?action=view&current=1160852125.pbw

  • Finish Math pg 76/77 (1-42)
  • Do noun worksheets

Rock Eagle is  Monday:  Be at school before 7:50 a.m.  Wear your Due West 5th grade tee-shirt.  We'll give you a Rock Eagle tee- shirt to wear home.

Weather:  It is going to be gorgeous.  Both days have predictions of 82 for the high and 56 low temperature.  We are in luck!  There is a 20% chance of rain so pack a light poncho.....a really inexpensive one will do.

We'll "rock" the eagle!  Rest up!

October 02, 2006

  • Spelling homework:  finish all worksheets
  • Math homework:  Page (I forgot and I'm at home) but do the input/output charts and the review and remember
  • Language Arts:  What's Missing? worksheet plus sentences

Remember our PTA program tomorrow evening.  It begins at 7:00 pm and we have a meeting for Rock Eagle chaperones at 6:30.
