Second graders complete "Starry Night"

Second graders have studied the life and work of the  Dutch artist, Vincent Van Gogh.  We looked at many of his drawings and paintings and concentrated on one of his most famous, Starry Night". Students practiced making the swirling wind with broken lines and the many stars with orbs of light circling each one.  Every child's interpretation was so interesting and original.

For Valentine's Day, we made "Valentine People" with many hearts, fabric, lace, and sequins.  Students had fun giving their Valentine a personality by dressing them in unique clothing.

Next we are creating a unique ceramic gift that will be glazed and come home for a special holiday in May.  Sshhh!!  It's a secret....

Third Graders create still-lifes inspired by the Louvre exhibit at the High Museum of Art

Third graders visited the Louvre exhibit at the High Museum of Art on December 9, 2006.  There they saw masterpieces collected by the three French Kings: Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Louis XVI.  Inspired by this experience, they have been hard at work creating a still-life of flowers using a paper doily (cut in half) and prismacolor pencils on black paper.  We talked about the differences in various flowers and students practiced drawing unique and different floral arrangements. These beautiful drawings will be on display in April for the First Artworks exhibit.

Fourth Graders create Illuminated Manuscripts

Fourth grades are studying how the monks of the Middle Ages decorated their handwritten texts.  They "aged" paper with tea and cut the edges with decorative scissors.  Working on the cafeteria windows, they then transferred the unique story they wrote about their ceramic goblet (created in the fall).  Notebook paper paperclipped to the back of their aged paper ensured that their story was transferred in straight lines.  They will then decorate each story with embellished designs.

Fifth Grade Research Papers

Fifth Graders are researching a famous artist of their choice.  Rough drafts consisting of a paragraph are due February 22.  The final research paper is due March 12.
