Construction Update. Buried Treasure at Due West!

OuDue_west_construction_update_001r construction workers were working hard to clear the way for the new transformers to be installed when they made an amazing discovery.  They dug up a 6,000 gallon tank that held the oil with which our building was heated back in 1958!!  Who knew??

Apparently the presence of the underground tank had been long forgotten and omitted from any site drawings of our campus.

Mr. Gene Blackwell, the Foreman of our construction crews, stated that the contents of the tank had long ago separated into mostly water on the bottom and some oil on the top quarter of the tank.  Even so, the Environmental folks had to be called in to ensure of proper disposal of the tank.

Mr. Blackwell estimated that fifty years ago the initial fill-up of the tank would have been around $500.00.  At today's oil prices it would cost $18,000.00 to fill the tank with heating oil!  Yikes!

And so another bit of Due West history was pieced together, even if it did delay the transformer installation by ten days.

The Front Office is scheduled for completion by August 1.  Mrs. Dewberry, Mrs. Johnson, and Mrs. Hanauer can't wait to move in!  The other construction projects, Admnistrative Suite and classroom additions, will be ongoing until Spring of 2008.
