It's hard to believe that we are in the middle of February. The weeks come and go so quickly lately. Our calendar is becoming very full with activities to enrich the curriculum. It won't be long and we'll be in the final nine weeks of our fifth grade year.
Conferences
It was wonderful to visit with all of you at conferences. I hope to keep the communication open even though we are finished with the "formal" conference. Mid quarters (Progress reports) for the third nine weeks will be sent home next week in the Thursday folders. Any student receiving a grade less than 80% in any subject will receive a progress report.
Friendly reminders:
Students should be trying to take advantage of the Study Island site for math and reading support. I will be providing H.W. coupons to all students who have made a point to take some tests both in reading and in math. A H.W. coupon will be awarded for any student who has taken a total of 6 tests and have received at least 80% or higher by Thursday, February 20th.

GA State 5th Grade Writing Assessment-March 4
We have been working hard all year with the various types of writing. We are currently writing Personal Narratives and will move to Fictional Narratives next week. Author's chair is a great time to hear each other's thoughts in writing. On Wednesday, March 4, each student will be given a prompt to write to. They will have two 45 minute blocks of time to complete this task. They will then be sent off to the County for scoring. In the meantime, we are continuing each day to add to the style, word choice, and the beginning and end of our creations. For most, this is a favorite time of our day!
MATH
We have covered Area of a Triangle, Rectangle and Parallelogram, Volume, Capacity in Customary and Metric Units and Multiplication and Division of Fractions so far. Any review in these areas would be beneficial for all.
Science
Our next unit will be with Electricity and Magnetism. We are currently learning about good nutrition in Health.
Social Studies
We have finished our Westward Movement, Immigration and Industrial Revolution unit. The students have worked in groups to create timelines from 1850-1910. Currently we are learning about the United States part in World War I. Soon we will begin World War II studies.
Reading Groups
Thank you to Mrs. Huff, Mrs. Hutchinson and Mrs. Spurgeon for assisting with reading groups. We are beginning new novels...two that relate to our World War II unit.
